Li Lanjuan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and also a member of the high-level expert group of the National Health Commission, offered advice to Jinjiang officials on the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus, during a video conference on Jan 31.

Attendees also included experts from six hospitals in provinces including Henan, Shandong, and Hainan.

Li presented her views on the current situation followed by a briefing from the director of Jinjiang Hospital on the condition of pneumonia patients recently admitted to the hospital.

Lin Chengzu, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases of Jinjiang Hospital, asked Li for her views on how to diagnose cases suspected of the virus, and how to deal with suspected or confirmed cases during pregnancy.

People who have had close contact with infected patients must report to officials as soon as possible, with a period of at least 14 days of medical observations required to make sure a person is not carrying the virus, said Li, adding that early detection and isolation are required to prevent the epidemic from spreading across the city.
