Huian county is located between Quanzhou Bay and Meizhou Bay, facing Taiwan across the sea. It has a history of more than 1,000 years since it was set up in the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

The county has a land area of 573.34 square kilometers, a sea area of 1,725 sq km, with jurisdiction over 12 towns and 218 administrative villages (communities), and a population of 802,000.

Huian county has convenient land and sea transport networks, beautiful natural scenery and abundant cultural attractions. It is known as the "stone carving town", "construction town" and "strong county in fishing".

In the first half of 2019, Huian's GDP reached 44.06 billion yuan ($6.28 billion), an increase of 8.3 percent year-on-year, and general public budget revenue totaled 4.4 billion yuan, an increase of 7.4 percent. It has been ranking among the top 10 counties with strong economic strength in Fujian province for 24 consecutive years, and ranked 35th among the top 100 counties of small and medium-sized cities in China in 2018 for comprehensive strength.
