Fengze district was approved by the State Council in August 1997 as one of the three districts divided from the original Licheng district. It is the core area of Quanzhou central city.

Fengze district covers 129.63 square kilometers and has eight subdistricts and 81 communities under its jurisdiction. It has a registered population of 272,000 and a permanent resident population of 583,000.

There are 53 cultural relic protection units in Fengze district, four at national level, eight at provincial level and 41 at municipal level.

Fengze district has all the factors for high-quality economic development. It has six colleges and universities including Huaqiao University, a national science and technology business incubator, five national mass innovation spaces, several high-level scientific research platforms, three postdoctoral research stations, and 12 academician and expert workstations. At present, the total number of all kinds of talents is 131,400, accounting for 22.27 percent of the district's permanent population.

The district is also the financial center of Quanzhou with 90 percent of municipal bank headquarters and 83 percent of financial institutions located in the area.

In 2018, the region's GDP reached 66 billion yuan ($9.4 billion), up 8.9 percent year-on year. The added value of the tertiary industry was 46.15 billion yuan, up 11.5 percent. Retail sales of consumer goods totaled 27.73 billion yuan, up 12.6 percent and investment in fixed assets increased by 18.4 percent. The per capita disposable income of residents was 54,471 yuan, up 8.2 percent year-on-year.
