Li Guangqian

Li Guangqian (1893-1967), born in Meishan town in Nan'an, was a famous overseas Chinese businessman, philanthropist and educator.

Li was born poor and studied hard in his hometown when he was young. In 1908, he was admitted to Nanjing Ji'nan school in Jiangsu province, and later transferred to Tsinghua institute of higher learning in Beijing. After completing his studies, he went to Singapore.

Li founded a rubber company in Singapore in 1928. After more than 30 years, the company had spread all over Southeast Asia and Li became an outstanding figure in the business circles of Singapore and Malaysia.

Li was not only a successful entrepreneur, but also devoted himself to cultural and educational causes. In the early 1950s, he allocated a huge amount of money to build kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, hospitals and theaters in his hometown.
